Whittington Castle was built by William Peverel after the  manor was granted to him by King Henry I.

As the castle sits besides the main road, access is within easy reach of parking. The most striking feature is the main gatehouse which is still in good condition and opens up into a park that contains some ruionous walls and towers to explore and have a stroll around. The moat does provide a great setting for this picturesque little castle.

~ History ~

1138 - William Peverel fortifies the castle against King Stephen.

1153 - The castle is forfeited due to the younger William's part in the  poisoning of Ranulf, Earl of Chester.

1165 - Roger de  Powys is awarded the castle and eight years later granted aid for its repair.

1223 - Building work is still in progress when tehcastle is captured by the Welsh.

1405 - The castle withstands an attack by Owain Glyndwr

1415 - The castle passes through marriage to Sir William Bouchier, later Earl of Bath.

After his execution by Henry VI the castle gradually falls into decay & its materials robbed.
